Why ChatGPT Recommends Your Competitors (And How to Fix It)

Most businesses don't know they're invisible in AI answers. Here's what drives ChatGPT citations and the three changes that move the needle fastest.

Why ChatGPT Recommends Your Competitors

When a potential customer asks ChatGPT to recommend a service in your category, they expect the answer to be comprehensive. If your business doesn't appear, you're not just missing a click — you're missing a recommendation that feels authoritative.

Here's why it happens and what to do about it.

How AI answer engines decide who to cite

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews draw from a combination of signals: what appears in training data, what's currently indexed and authoritative, and what structured data signals entity relationships clearly.

The businesses that get cited aren't necessarily the best — they're the ones that are easiest for the model to understand and trust.

The three fastest fixes

  1. Entity clarity. Your business name, category, and location need to be consistent everywhere the web knows about you. Inconsistency reads as uncertainty.
  2. Answer-first content. Write content that directly answers the questions your customers ask. Not keyword-stuffed — actually answer the question in the first paragraph.
  3. Schema markup. Structured data tells the model what type of entity you are, what you do, and where you do it. Without it, inference fills the gap (often wrong).

These aren't shortcuts. They're the foundation. Done right, citations follow — typically within 4-8 weeks.
